A recent review has identified the best camping mattresses in the UK for 2026, based on extensive testing of 27 models across various scenarios, from backpacking to family camping. The Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft was rated as the top overall choice, offering a balance of comfort, packability, and durability.
The review, conducted by a seasoned camper and science journalist, evaluated mattresses on comfort, durability, ease of inflation, packability, and thermal insulation. The Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft stood out for its soft, warm feel, compact size, and side rails that cradle the sleeper. It is suitable for back and side sleepers and is praised for its lightweight design, making it ideal for backpackers and family campers alike. Other notable models include budget options like the Decathlon Simond MT500 XL inflatable mattress, and luxury models such as the Coleman Supercomfort self-inflating mat. The testing involved placing mattresses on hard surfaces with sharp stones, assessing comfort, durability, and how well they retained inflation overnight. The review also considered the R-value, indicating insulation capacity, crucial for winter camping.
Why It Matters

Key Questions
What should I consider when choosing a camping mattress?
Consider comfort, weight, packability, insulation (R-value), durability, and suitability for your specific camping conditions and activity type.
Are self-inflating mattresses better than airbeds?
Self-inflating mattresses generally offer better insulation and comfort while being easier to set up, but they can be heavier and more expensive than simple airbeds or foam mats.
How important is insulation for camping mattresses?
Insulation, measured by R-value, is crucial for winter camping or cold environments to prevent heat loss to the ground and maintain warmth during sleep.
Can I use a regular mattress for camping?
Regular home mattresses are not suitable for camping due to weight, size, and lack of insulation. Specialized camping mattresses are designed to be lightweight, compact, and weather-resistant.
